As a schoolboy with literary inclinations, I read almost everything that came my way, from the plays of George Bernard Shaw to the thrillersof ' Bulldog Drummond', a forerunner of James Bond. A book that left a strong impression on me was a handsome volume called Words to Live By , in which various ' achievers' or people of eminence selected passages from the classics and various works of philosophy or religion. These passages or lines had inspired them at crucial moments, or during difficult periods of their lives. This prompted me to keep my own little notebook or diary in which I put down the ' words of wisdom' that I came across in the books I read. Seventy years later, I am still doing it as much out of habit as out of a need for advice from the great and the famous.
